Katyar Kaljat Ghusli (2015)Īn adaptation of a play of the same name, ‘Katyar.’ is a musical of epic proportions beyond anything ever seen in Marathi cinema. As someone who has grown up on Marathi films and has lived a couple hundred metres from the legendary Prabhat Talkies in Pune for a quarter of his life, I consider it my job, nay, my duty, to honour the best and the greatest Marathi movies ever made. So much so that Marathi cinema hogged the spotlight at the 64th National Awards with its psychologically probing films. Strong-willed, content-driven and intimate to the issues of its Maharashtrian milieu, it has come of age. Some of these films are still cult crowd favourites.īut the true renaissance of the Marathi film industry began in the new millennium, as evidenced by the presence of 13 films released post the year 2000 on this list. In the 1980s, two actors, namely Ashok Saraf and Laxmikant Berde, made a slew of iconic comedies and catapulted to stardom, working with actors-turned-directors Mahesh Kothare and Sachin Pilgaonkar. Nonetheless, the 1970s saw a wide range of films, from tragedies involving tamasha artistes to comedies starring the famous double-entendre master Dada Kondke. Shantaram helming some memorable films, the Marathi film industry was overshadowed by its more notable neighbour – Bollywood. But in spite of legendary directors like Acharya Atre and V. No.Dadasaheb Phalke produced over 90 more films as Indian cinema flourished. All songs are sung by Lata Mangeshkar, except "Ganjalya Othas Majhya" which is sung by Ravindra Sathe. The soundtrack of the film is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar on lyrics written by Vasant Bapat and Suresh Bhat. It is then that she decides to resign and give up all her work and return home. An administrative enquiry is set up against her. Sulabha is then questioned by committee and newspapers for her improper control on the home. They both commit suicide by burning themselves. Two of the inmates decide to run away but are forcefully brought back to the home. She discovers how a local MLA Bane has been regularly using the inmates of the home to satisfy his sexual needs. She starts some classes to educate willing women and also marries off one of the inmates in order to give a new start to her life. She hence decides to take steps against their sanction. But she is not helped by the managing committee which is filled with selfish and careless people. She starts with bringing discipline in the Home and also discovers frauds that take place there. She meets various challenges in her new endeavor. Determined Sulabha then goes ahead with her dream job. But her sister-in-law supports her by offering help in looking after her young daughter Rani. The job offer raises objections from her lawyer husband Subhash and conservative mother-in-law who refuse to understand her need to move to the town and work for rehabilitation of the women. She gets a job offer as Superintendent of a Women's Reformatory Home in a remote town of Sangamwadi. She has passion to do something constructive for the abused, assaulted, neglected and traumatized womenfolk of the society she lives in. Sulabha Mahajan is a woman who dreams to step out of the four walls of the house, assume greater responsibility as a citizen and play an important role in shaping the society.
